A Sunday Times article recently educated me about the author Danielle Steele, now in her mid seventies. She has sold over 800 million copies. I had to check that number, it is so enormous and she has written nearly 200 books, sometimes 3 or 4 a year.
I have never read anything by her. Why, I was wondering. Well, she is one of those very many authors who are ignored by the critics and never reviewed. (Interestingly it doesn’t seem to have done her sales figures much harm does it?!) However, it’s probably actually the artwork on the cover that is likely to put me off. To me it looks dated and a little dull. Not something I would pick up off the shelf in a bookshop. Presumably it greatly appeals to her millions of readers. Her stories, virtually all romances, are frequently considered to be formulaic but it obviously a formula that works.
I think I should read just one!
