Books to read before you die

Over a cup of coffee I rather randomly looked at lists of 50 or 100 books that one ought to read before the end is nigh. There are obviously many versions put out by different publishers etc but as you might expect there was a great deal of commonality. Pride and Prejudice was in every list as was The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and interestingly ALL of Harry Potter! I was pleased with how many I had read and of those that I hadn’t, well at least I knew of them. I have not read Lolita or Catch 22 but I have read George Eliot’s Middlemarch twice as it was an A level set book. Not entirely sure it would find a place on my list though. I am not familiar with Slaughterhouse-five by Kurt Vonnegut or Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. In some lists there were several children’s books: Narnia, Alice in Wonderland, Winnie-the-Pooh. Sometimes Charles Dickens was absent which was strange.

What would you want on your list … or not? It might send your reading off in a different direction.
