Bookish Thoughts

Authors not to read again(!):

Marion Keyes

Sally Rooney

Emily Henry

There have been very many times in my life when I have felt out of kilter with what seems to be the generally accepted opinion. These 3 authors would be another case in point. They are all phenomenally popular and successful but they just don’t work for me. There must be many others in this category but of course usually one is adept at choosing writers and books that one will enjoy. Occasionally though I get drawn in, maybe by super enthusiastic reviews or interesting, well written articles. With age, I have become more confident with my own tastes but there are still lapses.

Authors I love:

Jane Austen

Susan Hill

Penelope Lively

Elly Griffiths (but only the 15 Norfolk books)

Ian Rankin

Elizabeth Jane Howard

William Boyd

Douglas Kennedy

Kate Mosse

Elif Shafak

For a book lover it does seem only right that the ‘love’ list is significantly longer than the dislike list. And, as for Dear Jane, well it would seem disrespectful for her to be anywhere but at the very top of the list, although the rest are not in any particular order.

Neither of these lists is definitive of course. I wonder what your lists would look like?
