Do you like reading aloud I wonder? Do you like listening to someone reading aloud? Many have quite strong feelings about this, one way or the other. I don’t as yet indulge in audiobooks although I know many who do, but I used to enjoy listening to books read aloud on Radio 4. Stephen Fry was particularly good, as was Peter Jones reading The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
I used to read aloud to my children and to classes that I taught. It was interesting that, with practice, one could read ahead of one’s mouth! Sounds weird I know but what I mean is that your eyes and your brain could have read the words of the next line or so and thus you could look up from the print and deliver the words straight to the audience. It is a useful skill.
I read aloud over zoom with my granddaughter throughout the lockdowns. We went through all of Narnia, all of Harry Potter as well as The Hobbit, taking it in turns to read, chapter by chapter. A pleasant memory of a difficult time.
