‘I cannot believe you haven’t read this! Why haven’t you read it?’ Thus said my daughter to me, after discovering that I had not read Richard Osman’s huge bestseller about a group of retirees who have a penchant for solving murders.
So why had I avoided this book I wonder. Well, I think I was being a bit snobby about it really. Did I think it was too popular? Not intellectual enough? I can’t quite put my finger on it but anyway, as I couldn’t come up with a decent reply for my daughter, I obviously had to read it.
It is comedic. In some places it is laugh out loud funny. It is well written and the narrative flows smoothly making it an easy read. The humour is decidedly English, brilliantly observed, I enjoyed it.
However, if my daughter were to ask about the possibility of me reading another Murder Club mystery, well, I think I would hesitate!
