I very much enjoyed watching Wimbledon tennis a couple of weeks ago and inevitably I heard many interviews with the players. The rather facile questions that they are asked always include those about how they feel e.g. ‘how do you feel about playing on Centre Court?’ etc., etc. At that point I realised that there was a demise of the word ‘very’ and it was being replaced by ‘super.’
Thus, people were ‘super excited,’ ‘super happy,’ ‘super grateful.’ I have found myself doing it. shock horror!
This seems to be of part of being (super!) enthusiastic about everything; about life. It is a quality particularly attributed to Gen Z. Are you still with me I wonder? Gen Z are those born between about 1996 and 2010, so probably most of the tennis players I was listening to actually. If you are reading this I suspect you are most likely to be a boomer, a baby boomer i.e. those born after the Second World War up until about 1964. These are marketing terms that are now in quite common parlance. There’s more should you choose to look it up.
Anyway, back to the super enthused Gen Z. ‘Living life out loud’ is a phrase used by somebody very much younger than me to describe the approach of those late teenagers and people in their twenties. To be themselves regardless of the opinions of others seems to be important … and to live life in the superlative lane, hence everything is super. There are worst ways to be.
