Three Days in June – Anne Tyler

This is a slim volume but the story it contains is large and deep and complicated, maybe as in reality are all family relationships.

It is a difficult day for Gail. First she is sacked from her job, or did she choose to walk out? She is not entirely sure. Her ex-husband arrives at her door without a suit to wear to their daughter’s wedding the following day and he expects her to look after a homeless cat. This is both serious and funny; clever writing.

Anne Tyler is a consummate observer of the everyday and how we all manage to negotiate our way through the quotidian events of our ordinary lives. This is storytelling of the highest quality and it would neatly and sweetly fill the few hours of a long train journey. I recommend it … and then explore more of her many excellent novels. So much to enjoy.
