Do you like chapters I wonder? Is it something that concerns you in the book you’re reading? I dislike long chapters and I am thrown into disarray if my book has no chapters at all. Horror of horrors! Fortunately it does not happen often.
When I try and think about this I find it tricky. Do I like chapters as punctuation marks running through the book or rather more prosaically do I use them simply as places to stop and turn off the light? Quite honestly I’m not sure but I think I probably read for longer when the chapters are short, particularly when they are very short. In that case there always seems to be time for just one more.
I wonder if chapters come naturally to writers. Does it just feel right to pause in a certain place. Paragraphs of course are there to denote a slight change of subject and I’ve noticed the use of 4 stars and a gap being used. This sometimes seems to show a moving on in time or switching to a different character. Is that slightly lazy or maybe it is meant to help the reader know what is happening. I do find myself turning the pages to see how far on the chapter goes, particularly when I’m reading late at night. I do dislike stopping mid-way.
There are no answers here just rather interesting bookish thoughts.
