The Small Miracle – Paul Gallico

This is a small review for a small book, that is worth reading nevertheless. I came upon this little hard back whilst doing some clearing out and reorganising. I knew I had read it before but I thought it deserved a second look. It took me less than an hour to read but I am still thinking about it.

I have written about Paul Gallico before. He was an author who defied category and genre and wrote a long list of books of great variety. He is probably best known for ‘The Snow Goose’ and maybe for the story that became a film last year ‘Mrs Harris goes to Paris.’

However, back to ‘The Small Miracle’ and this is set in Assisi in Italy, the home of the medieval saint St Francis. A small orphaned boy and his donkey who is sick. The story involves his determination to get a healing blessing for his pet despite the many obstacles, spiritual and physical, that are put in his way.

The innocence of the boy and of the situation are compelling. This book would make a delightful small gift, maybe for Easter. I’m glad I came upon this story again.
